Fall Must Haves

Standard

So here are a few things that should be in your “Must Haves” list that I have gathered from looking at Pinterest for too long!  One of the great things about the items I will post is that they can all be used for other seasons as well!:

The great thing about riding boots is that they can carry over into almost all of the seasons.  I have a pair of Steve Madden’s and they are wonderful!  I wear them so often during the week and I take pleasure in knowing that they will last me for years!  They spice up a lot of outfits too! 🙂

Leopard Scarf found at Target for about $19.99

Found on Pinterest

I purchased a leopard scarf at Target and have fallen in love with it!  It goes with a lot of my outfits and is just cute and fun for the fall and winter!  I pair them, just like this picture I found on Pinterest, with riding boots and just some Converse if I want a more casual style.  The scarf that I have is pretty big and fluffy but it definitely keeps me warm!

Denim Shirt from American Eagle…about $29.99 and it’s on sale!!

I have owned a denim shirt from American Eagle for about four years now and have had no problems with it.  This is the kind of style, in my opinion, that will never go out.  It can be paired with so many tops and bottoms to make an effortless outfit.  I wore my denim shirt all four seasons this year so you definitely will get your money’s worth!!

Pleated Skirt from Forever 21! About $17.80

I just bought this and am in love!!  The colors are so fun and the look of this skirt is so unique!!  I’m planning on pairing them with fleece tights so I can continue to wear it into the winter!  I’m going to do a post about this skirt for my “Thanksgiving Outfit” so stay tuned!

Life of Pi

“Life of Pi” debuts in theaters tomorrow (November 21, 2012)!!  I have started reading this book and already love it!  It’s a fall must-have (or any season really)!

A classic must have for any season: RED NAILS!

Red nails are always classy and will never go out of style.  If you don’t know what to do next with your nails (and if I haven’t posted a nail tutorial hehe) red is always the answer!  My favorite is “So Hot It Berns” by OPI!

And there ya have it!  A fall must-have list that will work for other seasons as well!  Thank you for reading!  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to leave a comment on my blog! 🙂

For Those of Us With Acne, Acne Scars, or Red Marks on Our Faces!

Standard

Alright, so you know how you read all of those magazines and they tell you what foundation you should wear and how you should apply it for acne or scars but they ALWAYS feature a clear-faced model?  It’s annoying, right?  Well I once had severe cystic acne and I was SO embarrassed to go out in public (I took a form of Accutane and it worked wonders, I’ve been acne-free for about three months now!).  I used to walk with my head down and would rarely look at people when they talked to me (and I never did that before I had acne).  So I knew I had to find good make-up that really allowed me to feel confident and yeah, the make-up doesn’t make the bumps go away but it helps a lot!  And now that I have some scars and red marks left over from my acne that same make-up routine still works for me! Now let’s get started!
~Side note: I have yet to find a make-up that actually fills in the scars so with the make-up I use, at certain light angles, you can still see them but it’s not as bad if I weren’t wearing anything!

Step 1: Wear moisturizer, preferably one with SPF so you don’t have to worry about putting actual sunscreen on your face (I know for me even if the tube said oil-free I still feared a break-out!)  I’m currently using a moisturizer called “CeraVe” ($15.99 at Walgreen’s) which has worked wonders for me since my skin has severely dried out since taking Accutane, however it does not have SPF in it so I must rely on my foundation for that (which I will tell ya’ll about a little later).  However, if you don’t want a “super-moisturizer” like the one I use I suggest Neutrogena’s “Ageless Essentials Continuous Hydration” with SPF 25 (apprx. $12.97 at drugstores or Walmart).  I used this moisturizer before I was on Accutane and did not contribute to any break-outs and was very smooth on my skin and kept it moisturized!

Step 2: Primer!!  If you haven’t heard about this, you’ve definitely been missing out!  Primer essentially makes it so that your foundation will stay on your face and not sweat or melt off, which used to be one of my biggest annoyances!  For this, you will need to apply about a dime-sized amount or however much you need to lightly cover your face.  For this I recommend using “Smashbox Photo Finish” ($36.00, Ulta).  This product is amazing, it helps to reduce shine and is oil-free, so no break-outs!!

~The picture that I took after apply the moisturizer and primer shows some red (but not all) on my face which is right where my acne targeted.

My face after putting on moisturizer and primer

Step 3: Now is the time to start noticing the cover-up!  We are going to use a foundation.  Now I know it is strongly advised to NOT use your fingertips as a way to apply make-up but I have found that the heat from your fingers actually helps blend in the foundation more on your face.  If you don’t feel comfortable with this process, that is fine! You can still use a triangle sponge which helps cover your face at all angles but be sure to dispose of the sponge after every use as it can hold in the bacteria from your face and spread more acne if you use it again!  For my foundation I use Maybelline’s “Instant Age Rewind Eraser Treatment Makeup” ($11.99 at drugstores) with SPF 18 sunscreen but I DO NOT use the sponge applicator on the top of the product.  Now, I am young so it might be confusing as to why I would put on a foundation that is supposed to be for “lines & creases” but I have read that collagen (which is in the product) actually helps hide acne scars…which I am all for!!  Plus I find that this product just hides the redness and bumps really well, and trust me I’ve tried hundreds of products (and I’ll probably post another blog comparing them).  With this make-up I put on about a quarter sized amount which is enough to cover my face but not too much where I have to rub some of it off.  It’s also important with foundation to make sure you blend up to your ears and onto your neck so the look is more natural.

~As you can see in the picture there is some red present on my face still even after applying the foundation.

  After applying concealer

Step 4: Now ya’ll will think I’m crazy.  I use Dior’s “Air Flash” ($62.00, Dillard’s, Sephora, and other locations) which is another foundation but looks and sounds like spray paint.  Let me tell ya, this product is AMAZING!!  There is nothing out there that quite compares to it, and I know it’s on the pricey side but you will not regret buying this!  Yes, I use two foundations only because I want full coverage and that’s exactly what it provides.  This product is also tricky to apply.  My recommendation for application would be to hold it about 8″ away from your face and start by making a cross down your face.  Start from just below your hairline, as to not make you hair the same color as your skin, down your nose and down your neck a ways to blend in the color (we’ll go back and make sure the neck is completely covered a little later).  Then take the spray and go across your face horizontally from ear to ear.  Then go in a “Z” form across your face and spray any areas that may have been missed in the process.  Now, if you are fair skinned like I am you’ll want to make sure you spray your neck to really blend it in to look natural.  Even the lightest color Dior provides is a little too dark for my skin so I must blend, blend, blend!!  Let it sit for just a second and take about two fingers and gently push the product on your face and blend where needed.  I suggest letting this product sit on your face for about 10 minutes before you apply any powder products on top!  Beware though this product does get on your eyebrows and lips and will cause you to look like a ghost!  I would also suggest getting an eyebrow pencil to really amp up your look, and even though we might not always notice them, eyebrow’s sure are sexy!

As you can see this makes me look almost ghostly…but it will be fixed!

Step 5: After you finish possibly putting on some eye make-up, like I do, and you have waited about 10 minutes you’ll want to apply some powder products so you look normal.  I put on a light foundation powder by Revlon called “ColorStay-Pressed Powder” in fair (about $9.99 at Walgreen’s).  After that I put on a Victoria Secret’s bronzer in “Tantastic” (about $16.00) which adds more color to my face and gives it a soft, shimmery glow.  I finish off with Covergirl’s “Instant Cheekbones” in purely plum.  I really like this blush, especially for my fair skin, because it contours it very well and gives a nice pink sheen on my cheeks.  There we go! All ready to go!

Before and After!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to comment!  I have been battling with acne for years and have tried a lot of make-up regimes out there  and I finally found one that worked for me!  I owe a lot of my thanks to Sephora because one of their employees introduced me to a few of the products I mentioned and is the reason that I feel more confident! 🙂  I will also do a blog about my acne later on so stay tuned!

Thanksgiving Nails

Standard

I have this entire week off of school because of Thanksgiving so that means a week at my parents house! 🙂 I’m so excited, a week full of family and friends is exactly what I needed.  Anyway, my mom always decks the house out for every holiday so no matter where I walk in my house it feels like I’m in an autumn wonderland.  This inspired my “Thanksgiving Nails”!  All of the browns, oranges, reds, and yellows are so beautiful that I wanted to capture the autumn ambiance in my nail art.  So this is what I came up with!:

Now the “How to”!:

What you will need:

  • Sally Hansen: Advanced Hard as Nails, Nylon + Retinol Strengthener
  • OPI: “Suzi Loves Cowboys”
  • OPI: “So Hot It Berns”
  • Kiss Nail Art Paint in Orange (Walgreen’s)
  • Kiss Nail Art Paint in Yellow
  • Nail art fine tipped brush

First Step: Prep your nail (file, buff, cut cuticles).  Put on the clear Hard as Nails nail polish to help protect your nails and also build up the strength.  Putting on a clear coat can also help prevent your nails from being stained by your nail polish.

Second Step:  Apply “Suzi Loves Cowboys”.  Wait until it dries and apply a second coat.  This nail polish looks dark but in reality when you apply it, it is fairly light which is why you will need two coats.  I love this color and have worn it a lot this season, it is a rich chocolate brown which is perfect for fall and Thanksgiving!

Third Step:  Using the fine-tipped brush, dip it into “So Hot It Berns” and create about four lines branching out from your cuticle.  Repeat this on all nails.  BE AWARE that you will need to go over each line multiple times as this color does not like to show it’s brightness over the chocolate brown.  Even though you need to repeat this step several times, I promise the look will be worth it!  Wait for red to dry before heading onto the next step.

Fourth Step: Now apply the Nail Art Paint in Orange on top of the red lines.  Here you will want to put the orange in the gaps between the red lines.  This will be much easier to apply than the red because this is a neon color so I only needed to paint on each line once.

Fifth Step:  Once the orange dries apply yellow lines.  You’ll want to put this in between any gaps you have between any color.  This all will create a fan-like look.  It will almost look like an elegant array of turkey feathers or oak leaves!

Sixth Step:  Once all of the colors dry, apply the Sally Hansen “Mega Shine” to really make all of the colors stand out.  And you’re done!! The whole nail project took me about an hour and 15 minutes, so not too bad!!

I hope you enjoyed my Thanksgiving nails, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment!!

Pearl Street in Boulder, CO

Standard

Boulder used to be one of my favorite places to visit in Colorado when I was growing up.  There are so many different sites to see, unique people to watch, and places to eat.  One of the spots in Boulder that you must see is Pearl Street.  Now that I live in Boulder, this is probably one of my favorite places to go…still.  I’ve introduced many of my friends to Pearl Street and they fall in love.  The sidewalks are made of brick, the trees stand tall with history, and everything just feels so alive.  There are many street performers too, ranging from magicians, to fire breathers, to contortionists.  The shops on Pearl Street are also unique.  There are some name-brand vendors but for the most part the shops are artsy and sell things that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.  If you’re hungry you won’t have to worry about leaving Pearl Street to find a restaurant since you have so many choices at your fingertips.  My personal favorite is Pasta Jay’s, it’s an Italian restaurant with white and red checkered table cloths.  They probably have the best Italian that the West Coast has to offer (but that’s just my personal bias).  So if you’re planning on making a trip to Boulder make sure you put Pearl Street on your “Place to Visit” list!

Chevron Nails

Standard

What you will need:

  • Sally Hansen: Advanced Hard as Nails, Nylon + Retinol Strengthener
  • OPI: “Color So Hot It Berns”
  • Sally Hansen: “White On”
  • Kiss Nail Art Paint in Black (Walgreen’s)
  • Sally Hansen: “Mega Shine”

First Step: Prep your nail (file, buff, cut cuticles).  Put on the clear Hard as Nails nail polish to help protect your nails and also build up the strength.  Putting on a clear coat can also help prevent your nails from being stained by your nail polish.

Second Step:  Apply the “So Hot it Berns” nail polish to you index, middle, and pinky fingers.  Wait until dry and apply a second coat.  This color is beautiful for all seasons and you’ll probably not just use it once! 🙂

Third Step:  Apply the “White On” nail polish to your thumb and rind finger.  Wait until dry and apply a second coat.  This will look a little like white-out but don’t worry everything will turn out awesome in the end!

Fourth Step:  Now, use the nail art paint in black to draw on a sharp single wave.  This will look like an upside down “W” with and extra line or so.

Fifth Step:  Continue to add black to the line making it a thicker wave. Once you feel comfortable with the thickness of your wave, start a new wave.  You also may want to put a wave near your cuticle but that depends on how comfortable you feel about that.

Sixth Step:  Once you have finished all of your waves on your thumb nail (or whichever white nail you started on) finish putting waves on the rest of your white nails! 🙂  Once all of your nails have dried apply Sally Hansen’s “Mega Shine” to create an ultra shiny look that will also help prevent chips and preserve color.

Ta-da!! Your chevron nails are complete!
